Professional Positions
Graduate Assistant for the Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program
May 2019 - August 2019
During the summer of 2019, I worked as the graduate assistant for the Bridges to the Baccalaureate program. I worked with Dr. Brinda Govindan from the SFSU Biology department to teach students about basic microbiology techniques, such as gram staining, microbe identification, genetic sequencing, and experimental design. I did this by both assisting with lecture materials and by demonstrating techniques for students. Lastly, I served as a mentor for the students to encourage them to consider a career in science.
President of the SFSU SACNAS Chapter
May 2018 - May 2019
With the large presence of graduate students in the SFSU Chapter, there was a need to bring more undergraduate students to the table to gain their input. To better represent the large undergraduate population at SFSU, I was elected President of the SFSU Chapter, and with the position, I aimed to bridge the gap between younger students who want to pursue research and mentors who were willing to help them. Under my leadership, the Chapter expanded our outreach to more at-risk communities in the area and to act as a mentor for undergraduate students. I also managed administrative tasks and ensured the Chapter maintained good professional standing locally and nationally.
Board Member of the SFSU SACNAS Chapter
May 2017 - May 2019
As a board member in the SFSU SACNAS Chapter, I collaborated with other students and organizations to organize events to promote diversity in science. I became one of the two undergraduate board members for the SACNAS Chapter, and I contributed towards the community outreach projects run by the Chapter to inspire K-12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds to become scientists. Along with my work to inspire the next generation, I also worked to support communities in need. In response to the Northern California Fires of 2017, I organized a department-wide food drive to support the communities affected by these fires. A total of 150 pounds of goods were delivered to the SF Marin Food Bank, and it has inspired the Chapter to support causes like this annually.
President of Skyline SACNAS Chapter
August 2015 - May 2017
As the president of the Skyline SACNAS Chapter, I worked to increase the awareness of undergraduate research opportunities. Under my leadership and influence, there was an increase in student participation in summer research from Skyline College, and has led to an established relationship between Skyline and the different programs offered at SFSU. Each year there are more students participating in these programs, and many of them move on to pursue research.
Supplemental Instructor at Skyline College
August 2014 - May 2017
The supplemental instructor (SI) program at Skyline College is a peer-tutoring system that is meant to help students in some of the most challenging introductory courses. These courses include the infamous first-semester calculus and introductory chemistry. Students who have demonstrated a deep understanding of these courses are invited to be SI’s for these courses. As an SI, I developed my skills in communication and explaining difficult topics to a wide range of people. It also showed me that there are a multitude of different ways to approach a problem and that there are subsequently many different correct answers. I later moved on to establish myself as one of the most experienced SI’s in the areas of calculus and chemistry.
